Texas Quilt Museum Announces Call for Entries in Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Works
(Georgetown, TX) The Texas Quilt Museum recently announced a national contest for original works titled, Butterflies and Their Beautiful Kin. Inspired by the mission and purpose of the National Butterfly Center in Mission, Texas, this juried exhibition of contemporary quilts seeks to showcase the skill and creativity of talented textile artists across the country, while advancing a message of conservation.
Sandra SIDER, consulting curator of the Texas Quilt Museum explains, "When a friend shared American Butterflies magazine with me, I was surprised to learn there was a national organization committed to saving wild butterflies. I visited the National Butterfly Center's website, and was awestruck by the beautiful photos of butterflies, birds and other wildlife that inhabit this small preserve in deep South Texas. I marveled at how each creature is a work of art: colorful, unique and masterfully crafted, just like our quilts. That's when we knew what the theme of this year's call would be!"
Quilters are encouraged to draw their inspiration for Butterflies and Their Beautiful Kin from the natural world. Designs may be abstract or representational and feature butterflies, caterpillars and chrysalis, as well as the plants and flowers that sustain them. Thirty to forty quilts will be chosen from among those submitted to tour the United States, starting Fall of 2014.
"The National Butterfly Center is excited to be the first stop for the touring show of Butterflies and Their Beautiful Kin," states Marianna Trevino-Wright, Executive Director of the National Butterfly Center. "When Sandra explained her vision, that viewers will experience this exhibition as a fabulous butterfly garden in fabric, we knew it was only right for us to receive these works as a tribute, and display them here proudly. Our mission is 'Growing Connections', but we may have to change it to 'Sewing Connections', come next September!"
